The World’s Still Turning

I wrote this song in the fall of 1995, as far as I can recall this is the first time I’ve ever shared any part of it.

Where do you turn & what do you do when your world’s burned

You’ve nowhere to run & nowhere to hide, it’s time to face the truth

Just a lonely face, your friends are all gone & you’re alone

And then through the clouds comes a glimmer of light but is it false hope

So tell me does it make you feel alright

Holding onto a dream that’s out of sight

It’s hard to let go to a love that you’ve had for so long

All the tears that you cried & the nights that you died come again

You walk the streets at night just to stay on your feet & set your mind at ease

And then with one final leap you try to reach for the stars before you hit the ground

So tell me does it make you feel alright

Holding onto a dream that’s out of sight

Although your love is gone, you’ve got to carry on

You learn to take the pain, that much I know is true

‘Aint much sympathy out there, we’ve all got our cross to bear

But you’ve got to carry on, ‘cause the worlds still turning, still turning

You were friends for a while ‘till the novelty burned, then it’s over

You want it so bad but it ain’t coming back ‘cause it’s gone

You wait for that call with the telephone line wrapped around your throat

But its not coming through ‘cause she got on with her life, just like you should

You come through the fire & you realize everything’s alright

Hope flashes by but you know deep inside that it’s just love’s old game

Some nights ‘aint so bad ‘cause nothing lasts, even that pain

It’s alright to get on with life when your best friend in town is yourself

So tell me does it make you feel alright

Now that you put that dream way out of sight

Although your love is gone, you’ve got to carry on

You learn to take the pain, that much you know is true

‘Aint much sympathy out there, we’ve all got our cross to bear

But we’ve got to carry on, ‘cause the worlds still turning, it keeps on turning

This is lyrically & musically unedited & recorded as I originally came up with it, other than the solo which I added, because I thought it needed it. I like this song, it is one of my better works, hence I shared it first (I wasn’t going to put something awful out 1st), I have plans to improve this version of it & also ideas to completely change the style.

A couple of thoughts, I was 18 when I wrote this, that such pain was present at 18 is just sad. The song was written after my 1st serious dating relationship had ended, however what I know now that I didn’t know then is that it was much more about a lost childhood & my parents’ divorce that were never dealt with of grieved for.  I think it is interesting that while I was writing out of my pain, I also appear to have been counseling myself too.

If you have listened to it & made it this far down the page, thank you, thank you so much (even if you hated it). There have been a lot of internal overcoming’s to get to the place where I am ok beginning to share things like this, which is why I decided to just go ahead & put it out there, even if it is far from the polished product I one day hope to be able to produce.
